Top 5 End of Summer Vacation Destinations
Summer might be drawing to a close, but vacation season isn’t over yet. In fact, July and August is the perfect time for families, students, and young professionals alike to squeeze in one last relaxing trip to the beach before having to return to real life. So, grab your airplane pillow and your luxury beach towel and pack your bags. Here are our recommendations for some of the best places to vacation before the summer is over:
5. Black Rock Desert, Nevada
Black Rock Desert is hardly the place to visit if you want to beat the heat, but it’s quite a staggering sight. The main reason to visit Black Rock Desert in August, though, is the increasingly popular Burning Man festival. Burning Man works each year to “co-create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis of art and community.” The arts festival is hard to describe, but it’s the perfect place to freely express yourself, and it’s growing yearly in popularity. Last year, there were 70,000 people in attendance. Black Rock Desert actually flooded last spring, and as late as this month, there was some concern that the standing water might not dry in time for Burning Man, but organizers seem to be proceeding as planned.
4. Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
Last year, Rio De Janeiro was a coveted August vacation spot because it was the location of the 2016 Summer Olympics. The Olympics might be gone, but the beauty and history of Rio De Janeiro hasn’t changed. Visit the famous Christ the Redeemer statue or tour the grand Theatro Municipal, first opened in 1909. The best thing about Rio De Janeiro in August is, of course, the beaches. Our late summer is winter in South America, so Brazil in August offers a respite from the extreme heat of the United States but temperatures usually stay around 75℉, so it’s still perfect beach weather.
3. Vancouver, British Columbia
Vancouver is also a slightly cooler option, with summer days ranging from about 70° to 86°, and its location against the Pacific Ocean make it another ideal location for a late summer vacation. Long Beach, along the west coast of Vancouver, is not only a beautiful beach for surfing or just relaxing on the shore, but it’s surrounded by vibrant plant life. While you’re there, check out Bard on the Beach, Vancouver’s free outdoor Shakespeare festival, or Stanley Park’s Summer Cinema, also free and outdoors.
2. St. Tropez, France
The gorgeous French Riviera is world-renowned as a relaxing vacation spot, so it’s no wonder that people flock there from all over in July and August. It can be rather crowded this time of year, and many vacation vets recommend not taking a car to avoid the struggle of parking, but late summer really is the peak time to experience the famous beaches and sailing of St. Tropez. Fortunately, the city can be explored with a sensible pair of tennis shoes or by bike. Move slowly through the city. It’s rich in historic architecture, especially in Old Town.
1. A Caribbean Cruise
As long as the sun is shining, it’s never too late for a Caribbean cruise, and the Cayman Islands are especially beautiful this time of year. A cruise is the perfect vacation plan for couples or families. Take advantage of all the activities you can: horseback riding on the beach, snorkeling, touring the islands, even enjoying a relaxing massage or live performance on the boat. And, of course, take lots of pictures to show your friends when you get back.
